Would You Be a Spotlighted Mathematician at RBES?

Help our students see how math is relevant in our community.

This week’s Parent Spotlight Mathematician is Glen Smith, father of Luke in first grade.  Mr. Smith teaches high school math, so he uses and explains math every day.  He currently teaches Calculus 1 and 2 and loves showing students how math connects to so many things in the real world.  Mr. Smith also coaches the math team and gets to show students how to problem solve when faced with complicated math situations.  Mr. Smith believes that math is a powerful subject because it helps us understand the world around us.  From medicine, to technology, to sports - math is used to make things more efficient, more powerful, and more useful.
Do you have a job that involves a lot of math?  Please complete the survey link and send a recent picture of yourself to our math support teacher.  https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/BKWQ6PX

We want our students to see themselves as part of our community and to understand that math is a powerful subject from parents’ perspectives.  Should you have any questions, please contact our math support teacher at Sorsha_Mulroe@hcpss.org

Have you seen our Spotlight Mathematician board lately?
This week’s spotlight mathematician is Patrick Martin, father of Peighton in Kindergarten.
Mr. Martin is a firefighter/EMT in Prince George’s county.  There is a good bit of math associated with getting the appropriate amount of water from the fire hydrant to the fire engine and into the firefighter’s water hose.  These calculations have to be done in a timely fashion to ensure that his co-workers are not attempting to fight a fire without water.
Mr. Martin believes mathematics is a powerful subject because it helps us understand our world.  It also opens up many career opportunities if you can become proficient.

Tune in next week, when we feature another mathematician in our community!

Blessings in a Backpack

RBES’s Blessing in a Backpack Program has some open slots available. The program is designed to provide non-perishable food every Friday for our students who depend on eating breakfast and lunch at school during the week. Items can include cereal, fruit cups, ravioli and snacks. Bags are placed in the student’s backpack in a discreet and caring manner. There is no cost to participants.

The Blessings in a Backpack Program is funded entirely through private and community donations. If you would like more information on becoming a donor, please check out the information on Running Brook’s web page

Another way to donate is to buy raffle tickets for our Spring Bike Raffle! We are raffling off 4 bikes of various sizes at the Red Carpet Gala. Tickets may be preordered or purchased at the Red Carpet Gala, May 22, 2019 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. The winning tickets will be drawn at the Red Carpet Gala.
